Research Institute of Forestry

CAF Research Institute of Forestry was founded in 1953, and is the earliest, most comprehensive research institute with the most advanced technology. The institute is a research center of public nature, with research emphasis on forest cultivation, tree genetics and breeding, forest ecosystem managing and forestry ecological engineering. The main focus of the institute is to deal with the state-scale, important, cross-regional, fundamental and applicational research and technological problems of forestry construction. It is the undertaker of Forestry System National Technology Support Project, the 973 Project, the 863 Project, Fundamental Technology Project, Special-purpose Fundamental Technology Project, and Project on Public Forestry.
Under the institute there are 5 function departments and 12 research laboratories, also the Forestry Administration’s Urban Forest Research Center and Forestry Administration’s Coastal Forestry Research Center is under the supervision of the institute. It has Forestry Administration’s Key Laboratory of Forest Cultivation and Forestry Administration’s Laboratory on Molecular New Plants, and offers technological support to the National Key Laboratory of Tree Genetics and Breeding. Currently under the supervision of the institute there are 3 Forestry Administration’s Field Ecology Location Research Stations, 2 companies working on the industrialization of achievements, 6 reserarch centers of Forestry Administration and the Forestry Administration’s Seed Testing Center. Apart from the institutes mentioned above, there are 7 subcommittees and special committees of Chinese Society of Forestry, Chinese Economic Forest Committee’s Special Committees on Walnuts, Hazelnuts and Olives, and the Forest Soil Committee under Soil Science Society of China.
The institute has communication and cooperation with more than 30 countries and 20 international organizations. It has undertaken research programs sponsored by UNDP, FAO, CSIRO, CIDA and ODA. Also there are cooperative research programs with Oxford University, Edinburg University, University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences and North Carolina State University. These cooperations and communications demonstrate the institute’s impact on world forestry research.
