Planning and Policies for China’s Bamboo Industry Development at BARC 2018 Successfully Held by Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information

The 1st Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress with “Enhancing South-South Cooperation for Green Development through Bamboo and Rattan's Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals” as the theme was held at National Convention Center from 25 to 27 Jun. In the afternoon of 25 Jun, the seminar titled Planning and Policies for China’s Bamboo Industry Development, was successfully held by Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information. More than 80 participants from the bamboo industry associations and enterprises, managers, experts, scholars and media representatives from China and abroad participated in the seminar. Mr. Wang Dengju, Director General and research fellow of Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information hosted the seminar. The discussion was hosted by Dr. Fu Jinhe from INBAR. Experts and students on forestry strategies and planning and economic policies from the Research Institute also attended the seminar.

 

Senior officials, experts, scholars and entrepreneurs from China, Thailand and Brazil shared their experience in bamboo industry development planning and policies. Ms. Zhang Yanhong, Deputy Director General of Department of Forestry Planning and Assets Management of NFGA made a keynote speech on future-oriented bamboo industry development planning and policies. She said that China is a major bamboo producer and is among the top of the world in bamboo resources cultivation, bamboo technologies research and development and bamboo products innovation. But the comprehensive utilization of bamboo resources and value-added level is low. The scale of enterprises is generally small and innovation in science and technologies is insufficient. The priorities of the future should be enhancing supplying capacity of resources, increasing quality and efficiency of the bamboo industry, and enriching bamboo culture. She also emphasized that planning and guidance, market orientation, driving force of policies and innovation in science and technologies are important guarantee of the sustainable development of the bamboo industry.

 

Mr. Jin Wei, Director for science and technologies of Sichuan Academy of Forestry made a keynote speech on Sichuan’s bamboo industry development plans and policies. Mr. Kang Zhixiong, Vice President and Secretary-General of Zhejiang Forestry Industry Association made a keynote speech on Zhejiang action plan for bamboo industry transformation and upgrading. Prof. Dong Wenyuan, Dean of Research Institute of Bamboo and Rattan, Southwest Forestry University in Yunnan Province, made a keynote speech on Yunnan’s bamboo industry development plans and policies.

 

Mr. Civil Vitor Marçal, Executive Secretary General of Brazilian Bamboo Industry Association, Mr. Sapol Boonsermsuk, Director for international cooperation in Thailand forestry department, Mr. He Youjun, Research Fellow of Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information, Chinese Academy of Forestry, Prof. Hui Chaomao of Southwest Forestry University, Mr. Zhou Jun, Vice Chairman of Sichuan Huanlong Group, and Ms. Lan Lingli, Secretary of CPC Committee of Qingyuan County discussed on resources cultivation, quality improvement, market exploitation, brands building, planning and development, policy support and international cooperation in the bamboo industry.

 

As a research institute on forest soft science, Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information has made a lot of progress in forestry development planning and policies in recent years. The seminar of Planning and Policies for China’s Bamboo Industry Development at BARC 2018 provided a platform for exchanges in bamboo industry cooperation, policy dialogue and knowledge sharing, thus playing a key role in promoting high-quality sustainable development of world bamboo and rattan resources.
