Field investigation in Yan’an

Dr. Juli Gould received the award for outstanding efforts in international cooperation of Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection

In recent days, invited by the Team for biological prevention and treatment of pests of Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection, Dr. Juli Gould from the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture and Dr. Kim Hoelmer, entomologist from the U.S. Agricultural Research Service visited Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection for academic exchanges. They conducted an investigation on the China-U.S. Research program on anoplophora glabripennis and lycorma delicatula’s parasitic wasps and discussed the program progress and future plans.

The experts investigated the distribution and development of lycorma delicatula’s egg-parasitoids, vnastatus ramakrishnai, and nymph parasitic wasps, dryinus browni. The investigation found out that Yan’an of Shaanxi, Taian of Shandong and Beijing are major distribution areas of dryinus browni. Its parasitic rate there is much higher than that elsewhere. Future plans would be on biological observation, domestication and breeding of dryinus browni.

During the visit, the U.S. experts made presentations on Research on biological prevention and treatment of lycorma delicatula in North America and Recent progress on research in biological prevention and treatment of halyomorpha halys in 2018, in which they introduced the invasive situation of lycorma delicatula and halyomorpha halys from Asia to North America, and the biological prevention and treatment and results.

Dr. Juli Gould has cooperated with the Team for biological prevention and treatment of natural enemy insects of Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection since 2003. In 2015, she provided over 600,000 USD to the Research Institute as research funds. During the bilateral cooperation, 15 SCI articles have been co-published, more than 20 person-time in visits have been realized and 3 seminars have been co-hosted. In recognition of Dr. Juli Gould’s contribution, Mr. Jiang Zeping, Director General of Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection gave her an award for outstanding efforts in international cooperation of Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection.
