Main project technicians visited the pilot of forest resources inventory, monitoring and sustainable management of Gaofeng Forest Farm, Guangxi

The Inception workshop on APFNet Regional Forest Observation Project was held by Research Institute of Forest Resources Information Techniques, CAF, in Nanning, Guangxi from 25th to 27th Jan. Mr. Xia Jun, Deputy Director General of APFNet, and Mr. Huang Guangyin, President of Guangxi Forestry Inventory and Planning Institute, attended and addressed the launching ceremony. Mr. Pang Yong, research fellow of Research Institute of Forest Resources Information Techniques hosted the workshop. 23 forest technical officials and researchers from China, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam and Malaysia were invited to participate in the workshop.

Representatives from different countries reported their task plans and implementation programs respectively. They discussed remote sensing image synthesis in cloudy rain areas, remote sensing forest mapping and accuracy evaluation tools, forest change monitoring, forest resources inventory and carbon storage evaluation, potential problems during implementation, programs and joint working mechanisms. They also paid a visit to the pilot site of sustainable management of plantations and forest resources inventory and monitoring sample plot in Gaofeng Forest Farm, Guangxi.

The Project of “Regional Forest Observation towards Sustainable Forest Management” was initiated and sponsored by APFNet. It was an international cooperation project led by Research Institute of Forest Resources Information Techniques, in cooperation with Department of Inspection and Law Enforcement, General Department of Administration for Nature Conservation and Protection of the Ministry of Environment of Cambodia, Faculty of Forestry, National University of Laos, Forestry Information and Technology Center, Royal Forestry Department of Thailand, Vietnam Forest Inventory and Planning Institute, Forest Research Institute Malaysia, Myanmar Forest Department, Guangxi Forest Inventory and Planning Institute and Southwest Forestry University. The project aims at utilizing advanced remote sensing technologies to develop forest mapping and carbon evaluation methods suitable to this area, further strengthening forest resources inventory and mapping capacities of the sub-Mekong Region and Malaysia, building the regional forest observation mechanism towards sustainable forest management and climate change adaptation, and carrying out regional forest inventory evaluation through building a joint task force.
