On 7 Sep, China’s Innovation in Combating Desertification, a side event of UNCCD COP13, hosted by Chinese Academy of Forestry, was convened in Ordos International Convention and Exhibition Center. Mr. Zhang Hongwen, chief economist of SFA, and Mr. Pradeep Monga, Deputy Executive Secretary of UNCCD, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Ms. Pan Yingzhen, Director General of National Bureau to Combat Desertification, Mr. Wu Zhimin, Director General of Department of International Cooperation, and Mr. Zhao Liangping, Deputy Director General of Department of Afforestation, SFA, and Mr. Chu Fuxiang and Mr. Huang Jian, Vice Presidents of CAF, were present at the Conference. Mr. Chu Fuxiang, Vice President of CAF, hosted the Conference.

As a side event of UNCCD COP13 hosted by the host country, China’s Innovation in Combating Desertification received attention and support from leaders at all levels.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Zhang Hongwen introduced China’s achievements made in combating desertification. He said that we need not only manage our own land, but also have a broad horizon, and tell the Chinese story to the world. We need to show and share China’s experience in desertification control to the international community, and advance the global course of desertification combating.

Mr. Pradeep Monga emphasized the importance of global actions in desertification combating. He appreciated China’s contribution and leadership in this field, and expected China to play a more critical role in the future.

After the opening ceremony, officials from government agencies, research institutes and educational institutes, scholars and research experts made keynote presentations on China’s practices and progress in desertification combating. Mr. Ran Dongya, Director for Division on Criteria, Department of Scientific and Technological Development, SFA, introduced China-GEF partnership on land degradation prevention, from the perspective of comprehensive ecosystem management, sustainable land management and land degradation neutralization. Mr. Han Yufei, Director General of Ordos Forestry Bureau, showcased Ordos’ mode in desertification combating. Mr. Lu Qi, Head of Institute of Desertification Studies, and Wu Lili and Cheng Leilei, made keynote presentations titled Desertification: China’s solution to the world’s difficulty, Low-cover desertification combating techniques, and Values of China’s desert ecosystem services respectively. Li Xinrong, research fellow of Northwest Institute of Eco-environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a keynote presentation titled Long-term ecological research leads ecological reconstruction and restoration in China’s sand areas. Lei Jiaqiang, research fellow of Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, made a keynote presentation titled China’s projects and techniques in combating desertification. An expert from the research team led by Luo Youqing, professor of Beijing Forestry University, made a keynote presentation titled Controlling pest diseases in shrubs to combat desertification. An expert from the research team led by Gao Yong, professor of Inner Mongolia Agricultural University, made a keynote presentation titled Sand barriers made of polylactic acid fiber. These presentations showed China’s research results in desertification combating. Representatives were also engaged in technical interactions on pest diseases in sand areas, low-cover desertification combating techniques, and sand barriers made of polylactic acid fiber.

The Side Event enriched modes and content of international cooperation, and showcased research results and advanced applied techniques and international cooperation ideas in desertification combating of China, which could promote the achievement of land degradation neutralization and SDGs at national, regional and the global level. Built on China’s progress in desertification combating, the Side Event introduced China’s practices and expanded its international influence. In particular, the discussions and experience sharing on theories and practices in desertification combating among countries along the Belt-and-Road Initiative established China’s leadership role, and showcased China’s outstanding progress in desertification combating.

This Side Event was organized by Institute of Desertification Studies, CAF, Inner Mongolia Forestry Academy, Ordos Vocational College of Eco-Environment, and Ordos Forestry and Desert Control Research Institute, and supported by Northwest Institute of Eco-environment and Resources, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing Forestry University, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and College of Desert Control Science and Engineering, Inner Mongolia Agricultural University.

More than 200 youth representatives from 25 countries and 10 international organizations attended the Side Event. Over 30 youth representatives from Institute of Desertification Studies and School of Graduate Students, CAF, were also present.
