BIOCOMP 2014 Held in Beijing

The 3rd Forest Science Forum and the 12th Pacific Rim Bio-based Composites Symposium (BIOCOMP 2014) themed “green material, beautiful life” was convened in Beijing on June 5, World Environment Day. The event was initiated by China Society of Forestry (CSF) and IUFRO and co-organized by CSF, CAF, ICBR and Technology Innovation Alliance of Wood and Bamboo Industry. Prof. Niels Koch, President of IUFRO, Prof. Chen Xingliang, Vice President and Secretary-General of CSF, Prof. Zhang Qisheng, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and Dr. Dai Chunping, Research Professor of FPInnovations-Forintek honored the opening. A total of around 200 participants from 9 countries attended the forum, including Canada, USA, Germany, Portugal, Chile, Japan, Korea, Indonesia etc.

During the two-day forum which showcased the latest research findings on bio-based composites achieved by scientists from all over the world, participants carried out in-depth discussion on new techniques, technology and methods of bio-based materials. Prof. Zhang Qisheng, Dr. Dai Chunping, Prof. Anil N. Netravali from Cornell University of USA, Prof. Jorq Mussig from Hochschule Bremen University of Applied Science of Germany and Prof. Ye Kelin from CAF provided keynote presentations respectively entitled Current Challenge and Opportunity of Bamboo Processing Industry, Recent Research and Development of Wood-based Composites in North America, Green Composite: Application from Sports Facility to Ballistic Trajectory, Review of Biocomposites in Europe,  and Overview and Prospective of Wood Products R & D in China.

Three graduate candidates, Muhammad Navis Rofii from Japan’s Gifu University, Zhang Longfei from CAF and Tang Lijuan from Nanjing Forestry University received the Best Poster Awards. The symbol of host was passed on to Prof. Alex Berg Gebert from the Universidad de Concepción, which will host BIOCOMP 2016 in Chile in November of 2016.
