Professor Manfred J. Lexer and Dr.Werner Rammer from University of Natural Resources and Applied Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) presented “Hybrid Forest Patch Modeling for Forest Ecosystem Management （PICUS）” lectures at Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information (RIFPI) from June the 16th to 30th 2013. The experts gave two academic lectures in the Chinese Academy of Forestry on the application of PICUS and on the sustainable forest management planning in Austria. The visitors also paid a field tour to Mulanweichang State Forest Farm in Hebei Province, evaluating the impacts of various forest management approaches resulting in different forest functions and discussing the management matters of specific forest stands with the local technical personnel. PICUS software has been applied at the spot and Larix has been used as an example to perform modeling to predict the future 100 years of forest management needs.
The two experts have been jointly invited by RIFPI director CHEN Shaozhi and the deputy research fellow HE Youjun, the former is in charge of one of the international advanced agricultural technology talent project- “Technology Import for Multiple Functions Plantation Forest Management and the Prediction by Modeling,” and the latter is presiding over the research project on “The impact assessment and prediction by simulation to the multiple-purpose functions of secondary Northeast Korean Pine forest resulting from substitutive forest management strategy ”granted by the National Nature Science Foundation. The academic exchanges and joint study plays an important role in successfully completing the specified research task and in ensuring performance improvement.
