Being invited by Prof. Christian P. Kubicek and Dr. Irina S. Druzhinina (Vienna University of Technology), Dr. Zhilin Yuan, a young expert from Chinses Academy of Forestry (Institute of Subtropical Forestry), wrote a book chapter entitled “Understanding the Biodiversity and Functions of Root Fungal Endophytes: the Ascomycete Harpophora oryzae as a Model Case” , which was recently published in Environmental and Microbial Relationships (The Mycota, Series Volume IV),  (http://link.springer.com/chapter/10.1007/978-3-319-29532-9_11).

In this chapter, Dr. Zhilin Yuan aimed to provide an overview of current progress, future directions and challenges regarding the diversity, binary root-fungal interaction and field applications of root endophytes. To provide a thorough understanding of the molecular basis of root-fungal symbiosis, he specially focused on a novel DSE, Harpophora oryzae and highlighted its importance as a model organism to study fungal biology and evolution.
