Invited by the University of British Columbia (UBC), Mr. Xu Qing, research fellow, and Dr. Gao Deqiang from Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection, visited Canada for academic exchanges on forest hydrology.

During the visit, Mr. Xu Qing discussed with Prof. Wang Guangyu, Dr. Wang Tongli and Dr. Brad from Faculty of Forestry of UBC (Vancouver) on forest hydrology modeling, and scientific management and governance of plantations. Mr. Xu Qing made a presentation titled “The Hydrological Process on Typical Forests in Subtropical China: Based on Hydrogen and Oxygen Stable Isotope”.

They also visited the laboratory of Prof. Wei Xiaohua, chief scientist of ecological hydrology of UBC (Okanagan) and the Penticton Creek Experimental Watershed. The two sides discussed on how to use mathematical modeling and isotope methods to make quantitative calculations of distribution appropriation of precipitation in forest ecosystems, and processing and analysis of field data of water usage mechanisms of different functional plants in tropical forests in southern Asia. They also discussed the framework of the research thesis.

This visit contributes to advance bilateral cooperation, and promotes the implementation of the state-level non-commercial key research project of “Water usage mechanisms of pinus massoniana in subtropical forests based on hydrogen and oxygen isotopes”.
