Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry Attended BARC 2018

The 1st Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress was held at National Convention Center in Beijing from 25 to 27 Jun. As a key participant in China’s bamboo research, Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry sent experts to attend the Congress.

The Research Institute co-hosted a seminar of Efficient Cultivation of Bamboo and Rattan Development and organized Bamboo Industry Dialogue: China, Japan and South Korea. Zhou Benzhi, research fellow, made a keynote speech titled “Litterfall effect on soil respiration and its temperature sensitivity in moso bamboo stand under simulated drought stress” at the seminar of Ecology of Bamboo Forests and Climate Change. Shu Jinping, associate research fellow, made a keynote speech titled “Occurrence and Control Strategy of Bamboo Pests in China” at the seminar of Efficient Cultivation of Bamboo and Rattan Development. Several experts attended related activities of the Congress.

Research in bamboo is a priority area for the Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry. The precedent of the Research Institute, Moso Bamboo Research Team of Nanjing Forestry Research Office, was established in 1960. Since then, the Research Institute has conducted systematic research in bamboo forest cultivation, ecology, seeds selection and breeding, bio-technologies, pests and diseases prevention and processing and utilization. It became the first in proposing the cultivation technology of high-yield moso bamboo, has world-class research in certain areas, and is one of China’s influential pillars in bamboo resources research. It won more than 20 state-level and province (ministry)-level awards, including 2nd place and 3rd place in state-level award for scientific and technological progress and 1st place in the Ministry of Forestry’s award for scientific and technological progress. The Research Institute has contributed a lot to China’s bamboo industry development.

Through the Congress, the international influence of research results of the Research Institute has been enhanced substantially. The seminars organized have provided a platform for international exchanges between the Research Institute and world bamboo and rattan organizations and research institutes.
