From 1954 to 1957, he worked in the forest comprehensive investigation team of Ministry of Forestry in charge of the forest cover and comprehensive investigation of natural forest regions in Great Khingan, Western Sichuan and Northern Yunnan Plateau, Mountain Tianshan and the Altai Mountains in Xinjiang. From 1958 to 1959, he went to the Academy of Science of the former Soviet Union for further study. From 1960 to 1964, he worked in Research Institute of Forestry, CAF, and established a subalpine ecological positioning station in Miyaluo of Western Sichuan for scientific research. From 1973 to 1977, he engaged in translating and editing foreign works, and complied Mountain Forests in China and Forest Investigation Manual. Since 1978, he has worked in CAF, presided the research on ecological positioning of tropical forests in Jianfeng Mountain, mid-subtropical fir man-made forests and moso bamboo man-made forests in Hainan Island, inspected the large-scale agriculture of Hainan Island, and presided projects of research on dimensional forestry management of natural forest regions in Northeast China, research on the biological diversity in warm temperate and tropical areas, research on the ecological structure and functional laws of Chinese forests, research on the forming scheme of the biological diversity of forest. He is now the member of National Climate Committee, Chinese Committee of IGBP, Chinese Committee of SCOPE, Scientific Advisory Board of Ecological System, CAS, and the academic committee of the open testing station and the open laboratory of quantitative plant ecology in Changbai Mountain. He was also the editor in chief and the member of the editorial board of several journals like Scientia Silvae Sinicae.

He proposed the first classification system of forest site in China, in which forests are divided based on coenology, florology and soil characteristics, and forestland and the non-forest land are common in use. He first raised the academic hypothesis that the forming of subalpine forest flora in Southwest China was ecologically affected by three phrases of ecological isolation including the horizontal amplitude and vertical differentiation of outer zone component, and the inner zone differentiation.

He has completed 7 monographs, and has won several prizes of the advance in science and technology granted by the country and Ministry of Forestry.
