Prof. Luis from School of Forestry, University of Canterbury, New Zealand, is introducing genetic testing of Pinus radiata

During 24-28 Apr, a delegation of experts in timber species was invited by the University of Canterbury, New Zealand to visit the College of Engineering, and the School of Forestry,University of Canterbury for academic exchanges.

Mr. Jiang Jingmin and Mr. Zhou Zhichun, research fellow, and Mr. Luan Qifu, Mr. Liu Qinghua and Mr. Liu Jun, associate research fellow from Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry, CAF visited the timber science laboratory, the genetic and density testing forest of Pinus radiataand Proseed, a professional seed orchid company, for seed-breeding, nurturing and breeding of fast-growth timber species and valuable species. They learnt timber quality testing techniques, including timber stress and elasticity modulus, application and research and development of related equipment and facilities, arrangement techniques of forests for genetic and densitytesting, initial results of the experiments, and systematic management techniques of shortening seed orchid of commercial tree species, including Pinus radiata.

Experts from Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry discussed with scholars and managers on genetic and seed breeding theories and techniques of domestic and foreign Pinus, Pinus massoniana and Toona, and practices in shortening seed orchid, grafting and management, and found disadvantages and shortcomings. This tour is important in guiding future seed breeding and breeding of related tree species of Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry.

This project is supported by the state natural science fund project “non-destructive evaluation of timber quality and rosin condition of large communitystanding stock of Pinus elliottii Engelmannand its united selection research”, and the major scientific and technological project of selection and breeding of agricultural (forest) new varieties of Zhejiang Province “innovation of new germplasm of fast-growth timber tree species and multi-character united selection and improvement” and “techniques of improvement of precious and decorative timber tree species and breeding of improved varieties”.
