During 6-17 May, invited by the group of bamboo resources and utilization of Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry, CAF, Prof. Juliana Cortez Barbosa from the University of Sao Paulo, Brazil, came to China to learn technologies of processing and utilization ofbamboo shootsand efficient tending of bamboo.

Escorted by Mr. Xie Jinzhong, associate research fellow, and Mr. Zhang Wei, assistant research fellow, Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry, Prof. Barbosa went to Hangzhou Fuyang Qianxi Food Co., Ltd. and Hangfu Canned Food Co., Ltd. for field visits. She was interested in scientific and technologies achievement China has made in compound tending of bamboo forest, and deep processing and efficient utilization of bamboo shoots. She hoped that China could further advance export of technologies and equipment to Brazil, to promote rapid development of its related industries.

The Brazilian expert’s visit to China was to implement the MOU on bilateral scientific and technological cooperation in bamboo between the Ministry of Science and Technology, Federative Republic of Brazil, and Ministry of Science and Technology, P. R. China. As the leading institution in implementing the MOU identified by China Ministry of Science and Technology, CAF undertakes the foreign-aid project in science and technology to developing countries, “Bamboo nurturing and efficient utilization technologies from China to Brazil”, and “Technological export of tissue culture of sympodial bamboo and bamboo shoots processing”, a project hosted by Research Institute of Subtropical Forestry. The aim of the projects is through providing quality bamboo species for shoot production, and technologies in selection of improved varieties, rapid breeding of bamboo flutes and bamboo forest tending, and conducting joint research on improving Brazilian local bamboo forest, to quickly increase the area of commercial bamboo forest resources and the production of bamboo shoots and bamboo, and to provide efficient utilization technologies of bamboo shoots and bamboo. These projects will promote bamboo industry development, and improve the role of bamboo in eradicating poverty, increasing bamboo farmers’ income and ecological protection in Brazil.
