International Workshop on Forest Certification Held in Beijing

To further exchange international advanced experience, improve China’s national forest certification system, and analyze forest certification’s influence to sustainable forest management and opportunities and challenges faced by it, International Workshop on Forest Certification was held on Oct 26th, in China National Convention Center, Beijing. Mr. Wang Huanliang, Director-General of Science and Technology Development Center, State Forestry Administration, attended the Workshop and delivered a speech.

As the scientific session of the IUFRO Regional Congress for Asia and Oceania, entitled Promoting Sustainable Forest Management through Market Based Instrument of Forest Certification in the Asia Pacific Region, this Workshop was supported by Science and Technology Development Center, State Forestry Administration, sponsored by Asia Pulp and Paper (APP) and PEFC Council, and organized by Research Institute of Forestry Policy and Information of CAF.

Participants were engaged in in-depth discussions and exchanges on development trend of forest certification, product market, public procurement policies, certification criteria of monitoring chain of production and sales and legality tracing of timber, experience of certification enterprises of China and abroad, new challenges faced by forest certification, market cultivation of certification products, certification mechanism innovation and policy improvement.

Achievements made by China’s forest certification system during the past 10 years and the prospects after mutual recognition with PEFC were also showcased at the Workshop.

Nearly 130 representatives and experts from international organizations, including PEFC and ITTO, forest certification institutions in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Vietnam, Myanmar, Laos, Romania and the U.K., State Forestry Administration of China, China Forest Certification Committee, China’s forestry research and teaching institutes, forest management institutions, certification institutions, NGOs, and forest product processing enterprises attended the Workshop.
