From April 16 to 28, on invitation from the group of natural enemy insects and biological control, Doctor Kim A. Hoelmer from USDA and ARS and Doctor Duan Jianjun from USDA Forest Service came to Research Institute of Forest Ecology, Environment and Protection for academic exchange.

On April 23, Doctor made his report “Status of Brown Marmorated Stink Bug as an Invasive Pest & Potential for Biological Control”. The report analyzed the invasion of brown marmorated stink bug into America and prospects of biological control of the insect.

Stink Bug is generally considered as coming from Asia. After its invasion into America, it has done great damages on fruit production and had severe affects on residence. Till now there are 42 states have reported of the stink bug; in 10 states the situation is quite serious. Doctor Kim’s group applied the classic biological control method to deal with the stink bugs: in America they found 12 natural enemies of the stink bug, make them parasitic on the eggs; then they collected more than 30 parasitic wasps in northeast and southwest China. Their observation and selection of the parasitic wasps provide basis for biological control of the stink bugs.

Over 20 researchers from the group of natural enemy insects and biological control, of pathogenic microorganism, of plant ecology and pest control, of plant pathogen and disease control, as well as graduate students attended the seminar.
