On May 31, Dr. Clemens Michael Altaner from University of Canterbury was invited to visit Research Institute of Subtropical Forest and attended the seminar. The seminar was sponsored by National Natural Science Foundation Program “Study on the assessment and Combined Selection of Slash Pine Wood Performance and Pinoresinol Characters”, and was hosted by Assistant Researcher Luan Qifu from Group of forest tree seedling resources.

Doctor Clemens and his assistant Doctor Li Yanjie made 3 reports: “Sustainable, high value, naturally durable eucalyps” “Cellulose in plant cell walls” and “wood coring tools、core sampling and core analysis”. Doctor Clemens also visited the laboratories  of Research Institute of Subtropical Forest and Changle Experimental Forest. He discussed with local staff about the data measurement of timber tree properties, and scientific analysis of problems, which was beneficial for the local study of the related fields.

Doctor Clemens is the senior lecturer of College of Engineering in University of Canterbury and timber scientist. He has published 29 articles in journals like PNAS and Plant Physiology and 3 books. His main field is the research and teaching of wood property variation, hardwood processing, timber preservation and property changing. In recent years his focus has been on the molecular mechanism of timber mechanical properties.

Over 40 experts and graduates of the Tree Genetic Seedling Lab attended the seminar.
