CAF International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Capacity Building Project Typical Case 1 - Wetland Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Management
Author:     Time: 2021-12-31

CAF International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Capacity Building Project, funded by Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Non-profit Research Institution of CAF and undertaken by Division of International Cooperation of CAF, has successfully completed the project task in December 2021. Due to the impact of COVID-19 during 2020-2021, international exchanges are limited, which brings great challenges to the international scientific and technological cooperation of CAF. In order to promote international cooperation under the regular epidemic prevention and control, the project implemented 15 sub-projects virtually in 2021, inviting 22 foreign experts to conduct virtual lectures for 123 people. This project focuses on introducing two typical cases of "cloud lecturing", in order to provide practical reference value for the international scientific and technological cooperation of CAF under regular epidemic prevention and control.

Typical Case 1: Wetland Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Management

In order to promote the internationalization construction of wetland ecology in CAF and improve the understanding and mastery of advanced knowledge of ecology, Wetland Restoration Research Subject Group from Research Institute of Wetland invited Prof. Max Finlayson and several internationally renowned experts in wetland ecology to carry out 10 virtual lectures through the CAF International Science and Technology Innovation Cooperation Capacity Building Project.

Before the lecture, the main speaker Prof. Max Finlayson designed the comprehensive and systematic lecture course for Wetland Restoration Research Subject Group from Research Institute of Wetland, including 10 lecture themes such as climate change, wetland restoration cases, constructed wetlands, coastal wetland disasters, wetland species invasion, wetland management, RAMSAR Convention and the rights of wetlands. To expand the breadth of the lecture and to share more wetland restoration international cases, Prof. Max Finlayson invited 5 famous experts jointly presented for the lecture series and eventually presented a wonderful international frontier lecture series of "Wetland Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Management". The 5 experts are from Wetland Restoration Section of Society of Wetland Scientists (SWS), Europe Chapter of SWS, Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI), Institute for Biodiversity Law and Policy and Winton Wetland Committee of Management .

Lecture series was closely combined with the current international research hotspots, such as the latest sixth report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) as well as the "the Rights of Wetlands Declaration" of RAMSAR Convention. It introduced wetland restoration technologies, climate change risk and mitigation measures of wetlands, and the new concept of future global wetland conservation and management. The lecture series plays an important role in promoting the Wetland Restoration Research Subject Group from Research Institute of Wetland to carry out scientific research with international advanced technologies, participate in international conventions and cultivate international scientific and technological cooperation talents.

In addition, the lecture series has promoted the international cooperation between CAF and several organizations such as Australian Institute for Land, Water and Society and SWS, and it also provides opportunities for further joint application of international cooperation projects. The sub-project eventually formed a compilation of "Wetland Ecological Restoration and Sustainable Management", including course posters, course slides, meeting minutes and 10 recorded course videos.
